Belle Plaine sweeps Colfax-Mingo, wins SICL Gold Quad

BELLE PLAINE — A random draw put Colfax-Mingo's volleyball team up against the South Iowa Cedar League's best team in the opening round of the Gold Quad on Thursday night.

The Tigerhawks were the third best team in the SICL during the regular season but opened with Belle Plaine and lost 25-22, 25-13, 25-16.

Montezuma (11-6) defeated HLV in the other Gold Quad semifinal before losing to the Lady Plainsmen (23-8) in four sets in the final.

Morgan Van Dyke had eight kills, 11 digs and four aces to lead Colfax-Mingo (9-10), while Kyra Lester added 15 assists and eight digs.

Caylee Cunningham had five kills, Kira Warrick finished with six digs and Carley Underwood chipped in four digs.

Melany Vry and McKayla Smith both put down three kills and Chelsey Temple and Abi Rawlins each had two digs. Temple also served up two aces.

The Tigerhawks were 48-of-53 in serves. Van Dyke was 12-of-12, Temple served 11-of-11 and Warrick was 10-of-10.

Colfax-Mingo opens Class 2A postseason play at home against East Marshall at 7 p.m. on Monday in Colfax.
