L-S volleyball goes 2-2 at North Mahaska tournament

NEW SHARON — Lynnville-Sully's volleyball team opened the North Mahaska tournament with a pair of wins and guaranteed itself a spot in the championship bracket.

But back-to-back losses in the Hawks' final two matches sent them home after the semifinal round.

L-S began the tournament with a three-set win over Grinnell and a sweep of Tri-County. It ended the day with a three-set loss to WACO and a two-set loss to HLV.

Grinnell, which picked up its first win of the season against Tri-County on Saturday, started strong against the Hawks, winning the opening set 21-14. But L-S rallied with 21-12, 15-11 wins in the final two sets.

L-S then dominated Tri-County 21-8, 21-5 to move to 2-0 on the day. WACO defeated the Hawks 21-15, 24-26, 15-8 and then HLV downed L-S in the semifinals 25-12, 25-16.

In the win over Grinnell (1-9), senior Cayler Noun Harder led the Hawks (7-4) with 15 assists, two kills, four digs and three aces.

Senior Korinne Jansen tallied eight kills and four digs, senior Denali Conover had four kills and 10 digs and senior Krystal Van Dyke chipped in two kills, two blocks and two aces. Senior Jaden Brand finished with seven digs.

The Hawks were 43-of-47 in serves. Brand was 9-of-9, Conover served 8-of-8, Noun Harder was 8-of-9 and Van Dyke hit on 9-of-10.

Noun Harder finished with 11 assists, four aces and four digs against Tri-County (0-11). Jansen had six kills, Van Dyke put down five kills and Conover chipped in four kills. Senior Bryar Hill collected two digs.

The Hawks were 38-of-39 in serves with Noun Harder serving 21-of-21.

In the loss to HLV (5-6), Noun Harder had seven assists and six digs, Brand tallied two kills, four digs and two assists and Jansen finished with five kills and six digs.

Conover had four kills and four digs and junior Aliya James chipped in a pair of digs.

WACO (17-1) won the tournament and was 5-0 on the day. HLV finished second with its only loss coming to WACO. PCM and Lynnville-Sully were the other two teams to advance to the championship bracket.

Lynnville-Sully returns to South Iowa Cedar League play when it hosts Colfax-Mingo at 7 p.m. on Monday in Sully.
