Area Football Roundup: Newton falls to Grinnell, No. 1 PCM routs Chariton

Grinnell senior Wyatt Hunter rushed for 264 yards and five touchdowns as Grinnell's football team defeated Newton 57-13 in the Class 3A District 6 opener for both teams.

Hunter also had 82 yards receiving and scored another TD on a 65-yard screen pass.

Reese Hammons returned an interception 80 yards for a touchdown to put Newton on the board in the second half.

Zay Arguello rushed for a short TD in the fourth quarter for Newton's other TD.

Grinnell outgained Newton 512-214 in total offense. The Tigers (2-1 overall, 1-0 in the district) rushed for 322 yards and were 6-of-8 in the red zone.

Newton (0-3, 0-1) turned it over twice and trailed 43-0 at halftime.

Nate Maki rushed for 78 yards on 12 carries and had 56 yards on four catches to lead the offense.

Arguello threw for 98 yards and rushed for 35 yards and a TD for the Cardinals. Keith Moko had two catches for 20 yards and Adam Mattes hauled in one pass for 22 yards.

Hammons led the defense with 4.5 tackles and a pick six, while Braydon Chance had a team-best 5.5 tackles. Mattes, Josh Meyer and Jacob Nichols each had three tackles.

Hunter scored the game's first six TDs. He had scoring runs of 11, 1 and 90 yards in the first quarter and added runs of 5 and 6 and the 65-yard TD catch in the second.

In three games this season, Hunter has 657 rushing yards and 11 TDs.

PCM 60, Chariton 0

CHARITON — Class 2A No. 1 PCM allowed 80 total yards to Chariton and needed just 11 first downs offensively to win 60-0 in the 2A District 8 opener.

Aidan Anderson had 224 total yards and three touchdowns, August Stock threw for 93 and had a pair of TDs and the Mustangs improved to 3-0.

Anderson kicked off the scoring with a 1-yard run and then scored on a 33-yard run later in the first quarter as PCM (3-0, 1-0) led 21-0 after 12 minutes. Sage Burns had a 20-yard touchdown run in the first, too.

In the second, Andrew Mitchell returned a fumble 64 yards for a TD, Stock had a 9-yard TD run and Brayden Berger hauled in a 28-yard TD pass from Stock to put the Mustangs up 41-0 at halftime.

The entire second half was run with a continuous clock.

The first-team offense got one series in the second half and Anderson broke off a 71-yard TD run on the first play from scrimmage.

Carson Duinink had a 79-yard TD catch from Carson VandeLune and Gavin Fenton had a rushing touchdown in the third quarer to cap the scoring.

The defense was led by Connor Bennett's 4.5 tackles. Gabe Lanphier also had an interception, Landon Fenton and Gatlin Boell each recovered a fumble and Mitchell scored on a fumble recovery.

Fenton and Burns had three tackles each on defense.

Baxter 36, Moravia 21

BAXTER — Rory Heer rushed for a pair of TDs and caught a third and Cody Damman added two passing TDs and a rushing TD as Baxter's football team got its first win of the season on rainy and wet Friday night.

The Bolts (1-2) led the non-district game 22-15 at halftime.

Baxter drove right down the field on its first possession of the game as Cody Damman capped the drive with a TD run.

Moravia (0-3) answered with a rushing TD of its own to get within 8-7. Heer's rushing TD made it 16-7 and Heer's receiving TD from Damman in the second quarter made it 22-15 at halftime.

In third quarter, Damman hooked up with Kael Johnston for a TD and Heer's fourth-quarter rushing touchdown capped the victory.

Johnston also had a third-quarter interception for the Bolts' defense.

BCLUW 27, Lynnville-Sully 0

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully was held to 87 total yards during a 27-0 loss to BCLUW on Friday night.

The Comets got their first win of the season in the Class A District 7 opener, rushing for 297 yards on a rainy and wet night.

Kyle Squires rushed for 20 yards to lead the Hawks (1-2, 0-1), while Dakota Seastrom had one catch for 21 yards. Conner Maston threw for 33 yards and one interception in the loss.

Jesse Moore rushed for 183 yards and three TDs to lead BCLUW (1-2, 1-0). Nick Curl had 66 rushing yards. The Comets did not complete a pass.

Interstate 35 50, Colfax-Mingo 0

TRURO — Interstate 35 recorded its third shutout in three games after a 50-0 home win over Colfax-Mingo on Friday night during the 1A District 7 opener for both teams.

The Roadrunners improved to 3-0 on the season and Colfax-Mingo dropped to 0-3. I-35 is outscoring its opponents 126-0.
