The Newton Fire Department announced it will be canceling the 9/11 Memorial Service for 2020 due to safety concerns involving COVID-19.
The department released a press release late Wednesday evening "regretfully" announcing the decision.
The recurring theme for the annual memorial has been “Never Forget.” The NFD will never forget the 3,000 lives that were lost that day, including 343 firefighters. In honor to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, members of the fire department will participate in a Memorial Stair Climb in conjunction with the Newton YMCA.
In addition, the department will be holding a private service for staff on 9/11. The NFD asks everyone to keep the families of all those who lost loved ones on that dreadful day in 2001 in your thoughts and prayers on 9/11.
