Maytag Dairy Farms hosts Secretary Mike Naig

Cheesemaker shares outlook and challenges of specialty food business

Maytag Dairy Farms hosted Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig for a tour of their facilities in Newton. Secretary Naig was visiting the Newton area as part of his 99 County tour across the state.

“Maytag Dairy is a great example of value-added agriculture in Iowa. I am proud to support Iowa dairy producers and the companies like Maytag Dairy that offer unique market opportunities for ag products and build Iowa’s reputation as a hub for world-class specialty foods,” Naig said.

Maytag leadership were able to give the secretary a first-hand view of the facilities as well as discuss issues and initiatives at the nearly 80-year-old company.

“We were happy to share this special place and tell our story as an agricultural business in Iowa,” shared Maytag CEO Don Boelens, “We’re encouraged by Secretary Naig’s support and understanding of the needs of a specialty food business.”

Maytag Dairy Farms produced the first wheels of world-famous Maytag Blue Cheese in 1941. The traditional operation continues using the same handcrafted methods on the same farm in Newton. In early 2019, the company was purchased by West Des Moines based Midwest Growth Partners.
