Mauer, BGM too much for Baxter football

BAXTER — BGM sophomore Jacob Mauer threw for 229 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 185 yards and three scores as BGM’s first game in 8-man resulted in a 48-8 road victory over Baxter on Aug. 28.

The Bolts’ only points in the Class 8-man District 5 game came on a 12-yard TD run by sophomore Cody Damman and a 2-point conversion run by Damman.

Baxter trailed 19-0 at halftime and was outscored 15-0 in the fourth. The TD for the Bolts came in the third, but the Bears (1-0) scored twice in the period.

BGM scored the first 26 points of the game. Most of the damage came from Mauer, who was making his first high school start at quarterback.

Damman finished 7-of-17 through the air for 98 yards and an interception. He added 50 yards rushing and a TD on 13 carries and led the defense with nine tackles. He also caught a pass from freshman Treyton Travis for nine yards.

Travis wound up 7-of-11 for 57 yards in his first high school game.

Junior Rory Heer rushed for 76 yards on 14 carries and caught nine passes for 74 yards. He finished with seven tackles and a fumble recovery on defense.

Sophomore Jake Travis caught three passes for 71 yards and finished with eight tackles on defense.

Junior Nate McMinamen tallied 8.5 tackles, sophomore Trice Clapper recorded two tackles for loss and sophomore Cael Shepley recovered a fumble.

The Bolts (0-1) go to Iowa Star Conference rival Collins-Maxwell for another 8-Man, District 5 contest at 7 p.m. on Sept. 4 in Maxwell.
