Newton Police Department

• Shawn N. Stevens, 39, of Newton, was charged with willful injury and assault while displaying a dangerous weapon from an incident that occurred at 5:58 a.m May 28 in the 1100 block of South Eighth Avenue West. According to the Newton Police Department, the victim reported being hit by a motor vehicle and receiving bodily injuries. The victim and another witness identified Stevens as the driver of the vehicle. Based on the injuries to the victim, statements taken and damage to Steven's vehicle it was determined he did strike the victim with a motor vehicle. Stevens was arrested on a warrant for the charges at 2:16 p.m. July 16 in the 1200 block of West 13th Street South and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Rebecca L. Summers, 53, of Newton, was charged with domestic abuse at 11:02 p.m. July 18 in the 600 block of First Street South. According to the Newton Police Department, officers responded to a call for a domestic fight where a female was threatening a male. Officers spoke with all parties involved and determined that Summers intentionally took a five-inch steak knife out of a drawer and threw it at the victim during a verbal altercation. According to to witnesses, Summers made threats that "one of them would not live through the night." Summers claimed a butter knife in the sink was what was thrown, however, the knife witnesses claim was thrown was the steak knife. It was found hidden underneath the mattress in the bedroom Summers was found in when officers made contact with her. Summer was taken into custody.
