Lynnville-Sully baseball wins 1A district opener

ST. MARYS — Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks shut out Twin Cedars in the Class 1A District 11 opening game Saturday.

The 8-0 victory sets up a rematch against top-ranked Martensdale-St. Marys at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Marys. Martensdale-St. Marys (23-1) beat Melcher-Dallas 10-0 in five innings Saturday.

Lynnville-Sully (10-7) lost to the Blue Devils 15-3 on June 27.

Senior Blaize Kuhlmann and freshman Conner Maston combined to hold the Twin Cedar Sabers to one hit.

Kuhlmann pitched four no-hit innings with two walks and one hit batter. He struck out nine batters. Maston worked the final three frames, allowed one hit and hit a batter. The Hawk defense had one error.

The Hawk scored single runs in the first and third innings, adding two runs in the fifth and plating four more in the sixth.

In the first inning, Kuhlmann drew a walk and freshman Caleb Rea went into as a courtesy runner. Rea stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. A one-out groundout by Bray Noun Harder drove in the run.

With two gone in the third, eighth-grader Corder Noun Harder walked and freshman Bryce Richards was the courtesy runner. Richards went to second on an errant throw then scored on a base hit by Bray Noun Harder.

Braden Alberts, a sophomore, reached on a base-on-balls and junior Blake Rea was hit by a pitch. Bray Noun Harder delivered a two-out, RBI single.

The Hawks rallied on two outs in the sixth with three straight singles by sophomore Owen Norrish, Alberts and Blake Rea. Those hits and a Saber error allowed a run to score. Kuhlmann’s base hit drove in two runs and he scored on a wild pitch.

Bray Noun Harder had two singles, driving in three runs. Hitting a single apiece were Kuhlmann, Corder Noun Harder, Norrish, Alberts and Blake Rea.
