Newton Salvation Army hosts free grocery-giveaway

The Newton Salvation Army will be hosting a free grocery-giveaway that is being sponsored by the Salvation Army and the Church of the Latter-Day Saints to help those families that may be in need of food.

The boxes consist of various food for cupboards and even the fridge or freezer and they will have 140 family boxes and 100 boxes for families that are one to two people or while supplies last. The event does requires preregistering at the Salvation Army with Salvation Army case manager Kelly Zach.

"The grocery-giveaway will be a very very large box of food and it will be the kind that you put in the cupboard ... but it is fresh food, too. It's fresh meat, bread it's an assortment of groceries to help families through this time," Zach said.

Additionally, there are no income guidelines in relation to being able to preregister to come to the Newton Salvation Army this Wednesday starting at 11 a.m. to pick up a box. The hopes are that people come out and get some help they might need during these difficult times.

"We are very friendly people. We just want to be able to help put food in your cupboard ... We don't need to know their income, we don't need to know their address. We don't need to know any of that," Zach said.

This was all made possible with sponsorship from the Salvation Army as well as the Church of the Latter-Day Saints to be able to assist those that may be in need of food in the community during difficult times like the coronavirus pandemic.

"We wouldn't have this if it wasn't for the Salvation Army and the Church of the Latter-Day Saints working together," Zach said.

Also, the Newton Salvation Army is also in need of volunteers to help carry the boxes for those that may need assistance. There are multiple ways that people can let Zach know they would like to volunteer to help out at the event on Wednesday.

"They just need to call me or show up Wednesday and say 'hey I'm here what can I do to help'," Zach said.

The give-away will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Newton Salvation Army and will run until no later than 3:30 p.m. Only one box per family will be given.
