Ranked 5A Indians beat Cardinals in Little Hawkeye doubleheader

Newton High’s Cardinals had opportunities to score against the Class 5A No. 7 Indianola Indians in the first game of two Wednesday night.

The home team just couldn’t string enough hits together. Newton had six hits in a 4-0 loss.

The Cardinals did score a run in the second game but it was in the bottom of the seventh. The Indians won 9-1.

Newton dropped to 0-10 in Little Hawkeye Conference play. It is 0-13 overall.

The Cardinals have a few off-days to practice. Next up for the Cardinals is a non-conference game at Class 1A No. 5 Wayne at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

Senior Night for the Cardinal softball team will be Tuesday when the Cardinals host Pella in a LHC contest. The varsity game is at 7:15 p.m. at the Newton Softball Field.

Against Indianola on Wednesday, the Cardinals were in the game, trailing 2-0 after one inning. A couple of base-running miscues cost Newton scoring opportunities in the first three innings.

The Indians had single runs in fourth and fifth innings.

Chassidy Henwood had two singles for Newton. Hitting a single each were Kya Butler, Peyton Durr, Malarie Zach and Jazzlyn Cooper.

Cooper was the losing pitcher. She allowed five hits and struck out three. Newton had four errors.

Kallie Van Kley took the pitching loss for the Cardinals in the second game. She gave up nine runs on 15 hits. Kadence Ahn pitched one inning and had a strikeout.

The Cardinal defense had four errors.

The one hit for the Cardinals was a double by Durr.

The Indians (12-2, 11-0 LHC) led 2-0 after two innings then broke it open. They scored four runs in the third and three in the fourth.

In the seventh inning, with one out Cooper drew a walk then with two gone Kealey Manning reached on an error. The Cardinal run crossed the plate.
