As these comments are being written there are more than 1.3 million Covid-19 cases in the U.S. and more than 80,000 deaths with more than 12,000 thousand plus cases in Iowa; 271 Iowa deaths. These numbers increase daily and medical experts believe the death totals could be much higher than being reported.
We learned as early as January, 2020, the possibility of a virus affecting the U.S. What did Donald Trump do? Well, first off he did not tell the truth, second he said the news reports were a hoax, fake news and Trump blamed the Democrats that he believed were out to get him. Donald Trump wasted almost two months of valuable time that should have been used to make sure the U.S. was ready with whatever supplies and equipment necessary. Instead Trump did nothing to protect the U.S. from what would be a pandemic like we have never seen before. While at the same time Trump was praising the China dictator saying everything was under control. And Trump is still failing to keep the U.S. safe. If Donald Trump had done his job in January to protect the U.S., how many cases and deaths could have been avoided? Trump failed his responsibility to the Country.
Then when Trump ordered the meat packing facilities to open and remain open, nothing was done before hand to insure the workers would have a safe work environment. All Kim Reynolds could come up with, was· if those employees did not return to work they would not be eligible for unemployment compensation. A real leader with any compassion for workers would use the governor’s office to secure safe working conditions before the workers could return to work.
And where is Joni Ernst? Has she lost her voice as well as her backbone? Ernst’s silence is proof she agrees with the inept leadership at the state and federal level.
The U.S. and Iowa deserve better. We need to think ahead to November and make serious changes in the President and U.S. Senate.
