Monthly fees for solid waste and recycling will increase by $2 starting July 1, and then gradually increase by 2 percent every subsequent year.

After settling on a five-year, collection and disposal agreement with Dodd’s Trash Hauling & Recycling, Inc., Newton City Council members on Monday approved a request to make changes to the collection and disposal fee schedule.

Instead of being charged $12 per unit per month, residents will have to pay $14 per unit per month for collection and disposal services.

By the end of fiscal year 2025, the fee will adjust to $15.16 per unit per month.

The city’s contract with Dodd’s Trash Hauling & Recycling was also set to expire by the end of June. City staff assert the local waste management service “provides a quality service to our community and has done so for multiple decades for a reasonable fee” with “very minimal complaints.”

However, operating costs have outweighed the current fee schedule.

Between the tipping fee changes at the Newton Sanitary Landfill, increased disposal costs for recyclables and higher prices for items like leaf bags and trash bags, the current charges no longer cover all the costs associated with the solid waste and recycling budget.

Dodd’s Trash Hauling & Recycling provides citywide trash and recycling collection services to residents of Newton, Kellogg, Lambs Grove and Oakland Acres. The waste management service also offers commercial and private rural trash and recycling services in Jasper County.

Dave Dodd of Dodd’s Trash Hauling & Recycling thanked the city council for allowing the family business to serve Newton all these years.

“And I hope they see that we still want to continue to do this,” he said. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to do it.”

Members of the city council appreciated Dodd’s Trash Hauling & Recycling’s response time to any problems. Councilperson Randy Ervin also praised the business owners for supporting the community.

“From the school, to the United Way, to the YMCA — they have given back to the community over and over again,” Ervin said. “So I am glad to see we have an opportunity to continue to partner with Dodd’s.”
