Mildred O. “Mickey” Hess, 90, of Newton, died Saturday, May 2, 2020, at Park Centre. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory is handling the arrangements. Memorials to Park Centre Garden View may be mailed to the funeral home.
Mickey, the daughter of Charles and Katie (Harner) Good, was born Oct. 10, 1929, in Des Moines. She grew up in the Montezuma area and graduated from Montezuma High School in 1947. Shortly after graduating she made her home in Newton. On March 13, 1948, Mickey was united in marriage with Burl E. Hess in Unionville, Mo. Mickey was a talented seamstress and worked at Rusk Home Center making their custom drapes and upholstery. She later was a sales clerk at Garrett Hardware and Oberstellar Hardware. Burl and Mickey also owned rental properties for which Mickey meticulously took care of the books and accounting. She was a member of the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and enjoyed volunteering for Hospice of Jasper County. She was a caregiver by nature and spent many years taking care of her husband and truly enjoyed time spent with family.
Mickey is survived by her children, Burl “Gene” Hess (Sonya Mehta) of Seattle, Wash., Kris Lynn (Jeff) Long of Newton and Janie (Bob) Galloway of Newton; 12 grandchildren; her many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; cousin, Deloris Burt; and her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Burl Hess in 2003; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Keith Warner; great-grandson, Gaven Warner; two brothers, Paul and Richard Good; and a nephew, Raymond Welcher.
