Newton Police Department

• Jerad O. Oldham, 40, of Newton, was charged with public intoxication and first-degree harassment at 1:14 a.m. May 2 in the 400 block of First Avenue East. According to the Newton Police Department, officers were conducting a routine patrol when they saw Oldham walking with an uneasy gait and stumbling as he walked. Officers made contact with Oldham and saw he had bloodshot, watery eyes and the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. Oldham admitted to consuming alcohol that night. He refused to do the standard field sobriety testing but provided a sample for the preliminary breath test which indicated a 0.99. Officers located an unopened bottle of Fireball Whiskey on Oldham's person and an empty bottle of Fireball Whiskey in the area Oldham had been walking. While officers were transporting Oldham to the jail, Oldham allegedly stated multiple threats and profane statements toward officer. Oldham said he would get off on the harassment charge because he was intoxicated. Oldham continued to threaten officers even after he was placed in a jail cell.

• Austin B. James, 19, of Newton, was charged with driving while barred at 12:35 a.m. May 3 in the 1500 block of North 11th Avenue East. According to the Newton Police Department, officers were on a routine patrol when they saw a red Jeep with no license plates. Officers initiated a traffic stop and identified James as the driver. James showed a status of barred in the state of Iowa. James was cited and released to appear in court.

• Sarah J. West, 41, of Cedar Rapids, was charged with public intoxication at 12:39 a.m. May 3 in the 100 block of South Fifth Avenue West. According to the Newton Police Department, officers responded to a call in reference to a public assist. Upon arrival, officers observed West sitting in the parking lot. West walked up to an officer and appeared to be intoxicated. He had slurred speech, unable to maintain balance. West admitted to drinking whiskey 20 minutes before officers arrived. West agreed to a preliminary breath test which registered a 0.94. West was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Trista L. Martin, 43, of Newton, was charged with first-degree burglary at 9:12 a.m. May 3 in the 1100 block of First Street North. According to the Newton Police Department, officers responded to a call for a female breaking a glass apartment door with a hammer. Once officers arrived, they saw the glass door being broken and then saw Martin throwing items from the top floor of the apartment. Officers approached Martin in the upstairs apartment and she was carrying a hatchet type hammer. Officers ordered Martin to drop the weapon which she did. Martin caused approximately $2,000 worth of damage inside the apartment she entered. Two occupants were sleeping inside the apartment. They did not know Martin and said she did not belong inside. She was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
