Alvin Robert Stewart, 83, son of James Alfred and Florence L. (Shaw) Stewart, was born May 1, 1936, in Oelwein. He was a high school graduate and graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism. Alvin had served his country in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1962.
On June 28, 1959, Alvin was united in marriage with Karen Louise Schroeder in Elgin. Alvin was very proud of his family including his four sons.
Formerly of Newton, Alvin enjoyed his work in marketing for Hanson Directory, from which he retired. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and Newton Masonic Lodge #59 A.F. & A.M., of which he was a 50-year member. He was an avid Chicago Bears and Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Alvin passed away Tuesday evening, April 28, 2020, at the Iowa Veteran’s Hospital in Des Moines. The Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, is entrusted with the arrangements. Burial will take place at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery in Adel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Alvin’s family or to a charity of your choosing.
Alvin is survived by his wife, Karen of Johnston; four sons, Kevin Stewart, Craig (Ann) Stewart, Keith Stewart and Larin (Melody) Stewart; daughter-in-law, Jill (Todd) Hickle; his four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Maryann (Lanny) Gibson; sister-in-law, Norma Stewart; and many good neighbors and friends. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; a brother and sister, both in infancy; and a brother, James Stewart.
Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family will not be having a public visitation or memorial service at this time.
