For the continued safety of riders and drivers, Heart of Iowa Regional Transit Agency (HIRTA) will remain fare free through May 31 and continue to request people only use HIRTA for essential and critical needs, the company announced in a press release Tuesday.
“The intention is not to increase ridership, these measures are strictly for the safety of our riders and drivers. HIRTA will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation, follow CDC guidelines and make adjustments as needed. Right now, we need everyone to do their part to help stop the spread of the coronavirus, and keep themselves and others, who must use HIRTA’s services, as safe as possible," HIRTA Executive Director Julia Castillo said.
The organization requests all riders be mindful of drivers and other passengers. Guidelines have been established for safety purposes. Riders are asked to wear a face-covering over the nose and mouth while on the bus and to sit further away, keeping a safe distance from the driver and other passengers.
People are asked not to touch drivers or other passengers. If riders use a mobility device, they are asked to turn their head away from the driver and not speak to them while they are securing the device.
Newton News previously reported in early April the transportation services provided by HIRTA would be fare free until April 30. Organizers say the company is committed to running operations as normal to ensure residents can depend on us as a reliable transportation option in these unreliable times.
HIRTA provides rides to citizens in seven counties including Jasper, Boone, Dallas, Madison, Marion, Story and Warren.
