Newton Police Department

Lorie M. Brown, 26, of Newton, was charged with second-degree theft at 11:37 a.m. April 24 in the 2600 block of First Avenue East. According to the Newton Police Department, officers responded to a call for employee theft. Officers arrived and met with the manager who said Brown had been giving discounts and allowing people to take property that had not been checked out. Regarding the known cases, it started on Feb. 16 and the last transaction was April 17 for a total of 29 transactions. The total amount is $2,461. Brown admitted to doing a price override to make items a lower amount and that not everything was checked out. Most of these discounts were given to family. Brown was cited and released to appear in court.

• Christopher S. Owens, 27, of Newton, was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief and interference with official acts at 12:30 a.m. April 27 in the 600 block of East Seventh Street North. According to the Newton Police Department, officers responded to a call by the victim stating Owens was breaking out her car window. The victim said the rear driver side window was broken out by Owens. Owens was located and was found to have several cuts and blood all over his shirtless top. Owens was commanded to put his hands behind his back and he did not. Officers attempted several times to assist Owens hands behind his back but he kept pulling away after being told to stop resisting. Officers gave commands to step back and he did not. Owens kept pushing into officers after being told to stop. The estimated cost to repair the window is $350. Owens was taken into custody.

• Christopher D. Maahs, 35, of Newton, was charged with driving with a suspended license at 7:18 p.m. April 26 at the intersection of West Eighth Street South and South Fifth Avenue West. According to the Newton Police Department, officers saw a van being driven by Maahs and he came back suspended in Iowa for non-payment of an Iowa fine with seven withdrawals in effect. The van proceeded east bound. Officers eventually pulled behind the van and activated their emergency lights on their fully marked patrol car. Maahs admitted to not having a license.

• Jon D. Lamb, 53, of Newton, was charged with violation of a no contact order at 12:45 p.m. April 19 in the 1400 block of East Seventh Street South. According to the Newton Police Department Lamb went to where the protected party lived. A witness saw Lamb in the garage by his Harley Davidson motorcycle with the overhead door open. The witness came back out around five minutes later and Lamb was still there. The victim said she heard the Harley start up but did not speak with Lamb. Lamb admitted to being at the residence but claimed the protected party had told someone close to him that it would be okay for him to come get the motorcycle. Lamb was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Darius D. Washington, 29, of Newton, was charged with driving while barred at 11:35 p.m. April 23 in the 600 block of South Eighth Avenue West. According to the Newton Police Department, officers were conducting a routine patrol when they ran an Iowa plate. The plate came back to Washington who was registered as barred. Officers ran the plate through Jasper County Dispatchers where they also said it was barred. Officers turned around and attempted to stop the vehicle. Washington had turned onto a street in an attempt to get away from the officers. Officers initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver and requested his drivers license. Officers ran the license through Jasper County Dispatcher's who said Washington was barred. Washington was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
