Three Mustang girls earn all-conference honors

Three Prairie City-Monroe girls’ basketball players earned all-conference recognition in the Heart of Iowa Conference recently.

The teams were released last week after North Polk lost in the Class 3A championship game for the second straight season.

Senior Regan Freland earned first-team all-conference honors for the fourth straight season, while senior Kate McCarthy and junior Lilli Baird were both honorable mention picks.

Freland, who also earned all-state, all-district and all-region honors this past season, led the Mustangs in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals and was second in blocks.

She averaged 16.4 points 5.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.4 steals per game.

Freland made 40 3-pointers, shot 40 percent from the floor, 26 percent from 3-point range and 72 percent from the free-throw line. She also blocked 13 shots.

In conference play, Freland averaged 16.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 4.4 steals per game while making 21 treys.

She shot 44 percent from the floor, 25.5 percent from 3-point range and 70 percent from the foul line. She finished with nine blocks.

McCarthy led PCM with 15 blocked shots. She averaged 3.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and one assist per game. She also had 14 steals, shot 49 percent from the floor and 33 percent from the foul line.

In conference play, McCarthy averaged 3.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, one assist and one block per game. She had seven steals, shot 51.2 percent from the floor and 30.4 percent from the line.

Baird was PCM’s second-best shooter with 32 made 3-pointers. She averaged 7.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists and one steal per game while shooting 27 percent from the floor, 24 percent from 3-point range and 48 percent from the foul line.

In conference play, Baird averaged 8.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and one steal per game.

Baird made 23 3-pointers, shot 30 percent from the floor, 27 percent from 3-point range and 50 percent from the line.
