Hawk teams split SICL doubleheader

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s basketball teams made up a South Iowa Cedar League doubleheader from a week ago at home on Thursday.

The Hawk girls tallied a 56-21 win over visiting Belle Plaine to go to 9-3 overall and 7-2 in SICL action. Belle Plaine’s boys (10-2, 8-1) came out of the deep freeze — trailed Lynnville-Sully 22-9 at halftime — to win 64-46.

The Hawk boys had a three-game win streak snapped. They are 4-7 overall and 3-6 in SICL play.

“There are a lot of positives that we can take from this game,” Lynnville-Sully boys’ head coach Nick Harthoorn said. “The guys saw what it can look like for us in the first half. We have to find a way to put two of those halves together.”

In the boys’ game, the Hawks were up 7-2 after one quarter and held the lead at halftime. Belle Plaine outscored the Hawks 28-12 in the third quarter and 27-12 in the fourth period.

Bray Noun Harder fired in 16 points for Lynnville-Sully and Kinnick McFarland had 13 points. The Hawks shot 33 percent, 17-of-52, from the field and hit 6-of-15 from the free-throw line.

Slater Young had six rebounds and Mason Rodibaugh pulled down five boards. Belle Plaine had a 47-31 rebounding edge. Zane Fraker and McFarland each had two assists and two steals.

Ben DeMeulenaere led Belle Plaine with 17 points followed by Jackson Tegeler with 14, Luke DeMeulenare with 13 and Trevin Straight with 11. The Plainsmen went 23-of-59 (34 percent) from the field and cashed in 14-of-23 free throw attempts.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls were up 24-10 after one period.

Holding a 33-14 halftime lead, the Hawks held Belle Plaine to seven second-half points.

“I thought our defense was pretty good and our rotation was pretty good,” Lynnville-Sully girls’ head coach Jerry Hulsing said. “Our offensive execution was pretty good. We took care of the ball well. It was nice to have good balance scoring.”

The Hawks had 17 steals in the game and they forced 28 turnovers by Belle Plaine. Both teams collected 31 rebounds.

Lynnville-Sully shot 39 percent (21-of-53) and Belle Plaine was 8-of-32 for 25 percent. The Hawk girls sank 10-of-18 free throws and the Plainsmen girls were 4-of-7 at the line.

Mallory Loftus had 18 points, five steals and seven rebounds for the Hawks. Krystal Van Dyke added 13 points and seven rebounds.

Cally Gibbs had 10 points and three assists. Korinne Jansen was credited with six steals and Loftus had five.

Jenna Fry had eight points for Belle Plaine (7-6, 4-5 SICL).
