Tigerhawk girls cruise past Keota in SICL play

KEOTA — Carley Underwood scored a career-high 21 points, helping Colfax-Mingo’s girls’ basketball team overcome a slow start against Keota on Jan. 5.

The Tigerhawks led 9-6 after one quarter but cruised to a 52-30 road win during South Iowa Cedar League action.

“Slow starts seem to be our thing, unfortunately,” Colfax-Mingo girls coach Blake Warrick said. “But we were able to build a small lead and coast through the rest of the game. I do have to do a better job of getting them ready to play from the jump.”

Colfax-Mingo led 25-14 at halftime.

Avery Rague put in eight points, grabbed three rebounds and had two steals, Brennan Rhone added seven points and three rebounds and Abbey McConeghey tallied two points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Underwood swiped four steals and grabbed three boards, Abi Rawlins scored five points, Caylee Cunningham totaled four points, four rebounds and three steals and Melany Vry chipped in three points and three rebounds. Kyra Lester finished with two points, two rebounds and two steals.

The win puts the Tigerhawks at 3-5 on the season, which equals last year’s win total. Colfax-Mingo is 3-4 in SICL play.

Keota dropped to 1-9 overall and 0-7 in conference play.

MAXWELL — A slow start plagued Colfax-Mingo during a 53-37 non-conference loss to Collins-Maxwell on Jan. 9.

The Tigerhawks (3-6) trailed 25-9 after one quarter and 33-17 at halftime and never recovered.

“A rough first quarter set the tone for the game,” Warrick said. “They were very physical with us, and we didn’t respond right away. Once we got settled down, we were able to get some good looks and some stops on defense. But it just wasn’t enough to make a comeback.”

Collins-Maxwell (9-2) won its fourth straight game. The Tigerhawks missed 16 free throws.

Underwood scored nine points, dished out three assists and grabbed two rebounds to lead the Tigerhawks, while Rague and Rawlins each had eight points.

McConeghey grabbed six boards, Rhone had five rebounds, Lester had four rebounds and Vry brought down three boards. Cunningham had three steals, while Rawlins, Lester and Crystal Lincoln had two steals each.
