• Paul. L Harris, 31, of Newton, was charged with domestic abuse and second-degree burglary at 11:48 p.m. Dec. 7 in the 900 block of North Sixth Avenue East. According to the Newton Police Department, Harris allegedly busted through the door of an apartment and then assaulted one of the occupants of the apartment. The victim and two witnesses stated Harris grabbed the victim and pulled her to the ground in the apartment while smashing items. The victim had no visible injuries but said she did want Harris to be charged and she also requested a protective order to keep him away from her. Harris was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Calvin L. Powell, 35, of Newton, was charged with driving while barred and given a ticket for a brake light at 10:54 p.m. Dec. 6 on North Third Avenue East. According to the Newton Police Department, officers observed a vehicle with a third brake light out at the stop sign and the intersection of West Third Street North and North Third Avenue West. Newton police initiated a traffic stop and Powell got out of the vehicle. Officers asked Powell to get back in the car. Powell was not complying with the requests for a name and kept asking why he was being stopped after Newton officers had already told him why. Once he gave his name and date of birth, Powell came back barred. Powell was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Austin B. James, 19, of Newton, was charged with willful injury from an incident that occurred at 11:58 a.m. Oct. 26 in the 2000 block of West 18th Street South. According to the Newton Police Department, officers responded to a call Oct. 26 for a fight involving weapons. Upon arrival, Newton police located two victims and both said James allegedly was upset with the victims over the treatment of his friends. James allegedly began yelling at them about the incident with his friends and was armed with a tire iron. James allegedly struck one victim in the head with the tire iron which left a gash in the back of his the head. This injury required four staples from an emergency room doctor to repair. James allegedly struck the other victim in the head and body with the tire iron and she received a large knot over her right eye and a cut on her left. A warrant for the arrest of James was requested. James was arrested on the warrant for the willful injury charge at 5:10 p.m. Dec. 8 in the 100 block of West 15th Street Place North. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Sheila L. Carty, of Newton, was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia at 3:14 p.m. Nov. 26 in the 400 block of South Second Avenue East. According to the police report, officers were dispatched to a Newton residence on a report of a trespass. Upon arrival, officers located Carty and ran a warrant check. A valid NPD warrant for fifth-degree theft was in the system. Carty was placed under arrest and searched. During the search, located a multi-colored pipe in her from left pocket. Inside the pipe smelled of burnt marijuana. Officers also found a pipe with white residue in her right shoe. The substance was consistent with smoking methamphetamine. She was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
