C-M third, Baxter eighth at W-G tournament

WOODWARD — Colfax-Mingo won two individual titles and claimed runner-up positions at two other weights during the Dennis Field Invitational on Dec. 7.

The Tigerhawks sent nine wrestlers to the tournament hosted by Woodward-Granger and came home with a third-place finish. Baxter also was in the field, placing eighth with six wrestlers.

Junior Noah Strohmeyer, who is ranked seventh at 106, won the 113-pound title after going 2-0. He won both of his matches by fall and improved to 3-2 on the season.

Senior Jakob Chapman won a title at 285 pounds. Chapman (5-1) was 3-0 on the day after winning twice by fall and once by a 4-0 decision.

Colfax-Mingo scored 119.5 points in third. Woodward-Granger won the team title with 197, while Martensdale-St. Marys was second with 143.5 and Southeast Warren/Melcher-Dallas finished fourth in 113.

Coon Rapids-Bayard (70), Roland-Story (62.5), Collins-Maxwell (58) and Baxter (35) rounded out the field.

The Bolts’ top finisher was freshman Curtis Gliem at 106 pounds. He was third on the day after going 1-2 with a win by fall.

Chapman’s 4-0 decision came against Baxter junior Micah Kearns. Kearns was fourth in the 285-pound weight class after an 0-3 day.

Senior Cyden Fitch was second at 138 for the Tigerhawks. He was 3-1 on the day with his lone loss coming against Martensdale-St. Marys’ Cole Cassady, who is ranked second at 132 pounds.

Fitch (6-1) won three matches by fall and lost to Cassady 10-1.

Senior Trystin Ross (4-2) was the other runner-up finisher. Ross, who is ranked eighth at 160, was 2-1 at 170. He lost his first match 4-3 but recovered to win by fall and by an 18-2 technical fall.

Ross’ technical fall came against Baxter junior Brad Matthews, who was 0-3 and finished fourth at 170.

Senior Will Thornton (220), junior Hunter Stevens (160) and sophomore Shane Aikin (182) were all third their weights, while seniors Hunter Green (132) and Tim Carroll (152) were fourth for the Tigerhawks.

Stevens (4-3) was 3-1 with a pin and two wins by decision at 160. Aikin (4-3) was 2-2 with a pin and an injury default at 182 and Thornton was 1-2 at 220 with the victory coming against Baxter freshman Jackson Bottorff, who was 0-3 and finished fourth.

Aikin’s win by fall came against Baxter senior Dallas Hill, who was 0-4 and placed fifth.

Carroll won a pair of matches, one by fall and one by major decision, and Green was 1-3 with a win by pin.

Baxter freshman Cole Smith was fifth at 120 despite earning two wins by pin.

Colfax-Mingo hosted Interstate 35 and Collins-Maxwell on Dec. 10. The Tigerhawks take on Saydel, Roland-Story and South Hamilton at 6 p.m. on Dec. 12 in Des Moines.

Baxter faces AGWSR at 6:15 p.m. on Dec. 12 in Ackley.

Bolts open season with two dual losses

MONTEZUMA — Smith claimed a win by fall in 24 seconds during Baxter’s season-opening duals on Dec. 5.

Smith won his match at 120 pounds, and Gliem and Botthorff claimed victories by forfeit, but the Bolts suffered a 48-18 loss to WACO.

Baxter also lost to Sigourney-Keota 58-0. The Savages went 6-0 in contested matches.

There were four contested matches in the WACO dual. Smith won his match by fall for the Bolts’ only win. Gliem took a forfeit at 113 and Botthorff accepted his forfeit at 195.

Baxter gave up five forfeits and there were three double forfeits.
