CONRAD — Baxter’s girls basketball team led BCLUW after one quarter. But the Comets dominated the second and third quarters and took down the Bolts in their season opener 56-40.
BCLUW outscored Baxter 30-13 in the middle two quarters after Baxter led 14-11 after one period. The Comets won the fourth quarter 15-13.
Senior Caitlyn Bruntz led the Bolts with 10 points, two rebounds, four assists and five steals and junior Sophie Meyer added nine points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Junior Lexi Samson scored a career-high seven points and added three boards for the Bolts (0-1). Senior Sadie Meyer finished with six points, three rebounds and two assists and junior McKenzie Eslinger tallied five points and eight rebounds.
Baxter shot 32 percent from the floor and made 4-of-16 from 3-point range. The Bolts were 4-of-15 from the free-throw line.
Sophomore Chloe Walters led BCLUW (2-0) with 25 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
The Bolts take on Iowa Star Conference rival GMG in its home opener at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Baxter.
