Prep wrestling 2020 postseason tournament assignments are set

Iowa High School Athletic Association announced the 2020 high school wrestling postseason assignments a week ago.

The area five high school wrestling teams know where they will compete in sectionals and district meets in February.

Sectional tournaments for Class 2A and 1A are Feb. 8. District tournaments are Feb. 15 for Class 3A, 2A and 1A.

Newton High’s Cardinals will be in Marshalltown on Feb. 15 for 3A District 8 tournament action. Joining those two schools will be Cedar Falls, Waterloo East, Waterloo West, Waukee, Waverley-Shell Rock and Cedar Rapids Xavier

Prairie City-Monroe is in 2A Sectional 10 hosted by Carlisle. Other teams in the sectional are Bondurant-Farrar, Grinnell, Saydel and Van Meter-Earlham. Sectional 10 is paired with Sectional 9, which is at Albia with Centerville, Central Decatur, Chariton, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont and Knoxville.

The first and second-place winners in each weight class from Sectional 10 and Sectional 9 advance to the 2A District 5 tournament at Knoxville.

The area’s three 1A teams are in two different sectionals but in the same district. The first and second-place winners in each weight class from 1A Sectional 7 and Sectional 8 advance to the 1A District 4 tournament at Pleasantville.

Colfax-Mingo and Baxter are in the 1A Sectional 8 hosted by Ogden. Other teams in the sectional are Collins-Maxwell, Martensdale-St. Marys, Meskwaki Settlement, Pleasantville and South Hamilton.

Lynnville-Sully is in the 1A Sectional 7 tournament hosted by Interstate 35 at Truro. The other teams in the sectional are East Union, Moravia, Mount Ayr, Southeast Warren and Wayne.

The top two wrestlers in each weight class from district tournaments qualify for the 2020 state tournament, Feb. 20-22, in Des Moines.
