PLEASANTVILLE —Lynnville-Sully freshman Greenlee Smock edged out Melcher-Dallas J’Lyn Knutson to claim the individual title of the girls’ varsity race at Monday’s Pleasantville Trojan Cross Country Invitational.
Smock, ranked No. 28 in Class 1A, won in 20 minutes, 1 second for the course. Knutson, No. 20 in 1A, came across in 20:02. Colfax-Mingo senior Abbey McConeghey took third in 20:18.
"Greenlee ran very a very smart race up front the whole way against some other ranked 1A girls. In the end it came down to her and a girl from Melcher-Dallas," Lynnville-Sully coach Darin Arkema said. "Greenlee closed the gap on her with a furious final kick and edged her out at the finish line to claim her first meet championship of her career."
Freshman Paige Steenhoek paced the Prairie City-Monroe to the team title as she finished fourth in 20:37. The Mustang girls had 47 points for first followed by Lynnville-Sully with 67 points.
Colfax-Mingo was fifth in the six-team field. The Tigerhawk girls scored 92 points.
Arkema said he was proud how the Hawk runners maintained a good attitude going into the race on a very warm and muggy evening. The course was just short of 3.1 miles, Arkema said, as the teams were made aware of that fact before the races began.
PCM’s boys finished second in their division with 96 points. Central Decatur was the boys’ team champion with 51 points.
Colfax-Mingo’s boys finished third with 102 points. Lynnville-Sully scored 182 points for seventh in an 11-team field at the Pleasantville Golf and Country Club.
PCM junior Beau Webb had the best finish for area boys. He was seventh in 17:40 with Lynnville-Sully freshman James Gruver taking 11th in 17:54 and PCM senior Jason Stafford was 12th in 18:04.
Colfax-Mingo freshman Max Vandusseldorp and senior Hunter Green were 16th and 17th, respectively, in 18:33.
