A new motorcycle shop has made its way into Newton and is ready to provide motorcycle needs, whether that be a repair or customization.
Jake Smith, Newton native and co-owner of BS & Bikes, has helped make bike shop services available by appointment for now since he works construction full-time.
With the full-time jobs, the owners are typically in the shop during evenings. Smith said appointments are generally available from 6 to 9:30 p.m. during the week and on weekends. He hopes to have more set business hours for customers in the future.
“The goal will be to possibly sometime next year to start getting more normal business hours and stepping away from the full-time job at least a little bit,” Smith said.
The inspiration for Smith to open the motorcycle shop comes from his enjoyment of working on them and riding, as well as the joy he feels motorcycles bring to people around them.
“I just love working on them. There is just something about motorcycles that just makes everyone smile,” Smith said. “I started riding them and I found out that I loved working on them and making changes to them.”
Smith’s business partner is Greg Blom. Between the two of them they have enough experience to get the job done for residents of Jasper County.
“My business partner has been riding and wrenching on them for 25-plus years,” Smith said.
According to the BS & Bikes Facebook page, the shop will offer services including tires, service, repairs, handlebars, stereos and after-market parts installation. There is possibility in the future for the shop to start selling bikes as well.
“Eventually that is our plan but we are basically trying to start small and work our way up to that,” Smith said.
There was a need for a motorcycle shop in Newton, Smith said. A lot of times people would have to take their bikes out of town to get them worked on, which created another hassle for riders.
“I just want people to know what we do and who we are and that there is a motorcycle shop in Newton where there really hasn’t been one in the past. Everyone has had to take their bikes out of town to get anything done on them,” Smith said. “We thought it would benefit a lot of riders.”
Anyone interested may contact the shop owners through the BS & Bikes Facebook page or by using the contact information listed on the site. A website has not been established yet, but smith said they hope to start one soon.
