No. 7 Hawks survive, advance in 1A softball playoffs; L-S baseball loses on the road

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s Class 1A seventh-ranked Hawks rallied late to claim a 4-3 win at home against Lone Tree’s Lady Lions. The win came in 1A Region 5 quarterfinal play.

The Lady Lions broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth. The Hawks tied it up with two in the fifth. In the seventh inning, Lynnville-Sully held Lone Tree to one run and plated two runs for the final margin.

Lynnville-Sully (24-8) hosts fellow South Iowa Cedar League member BGM (13-13) in a 7 p.m. semifinal game on Friday in Sully. BGM edged Winfield-Mt. Union 2-1 on Wednesday.

Two other SICL teams will face off in the other regional semifinal — No. 15 North Mahaska hosts Sigourney.

Denali Conover pitched a complete game for the Hawks, giving up six hits. She walked three and struck out four.

Conover drove in three runs as she hit a single and a double in the game. Korinne Jansen had two singles and one RBI. Laci Keen singled.

Lynnville-Sully baseball

TRAER — Lynnville-Sully’s baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to host North Tama on Wednesday. The Hawks (10-19) have one more regular-season game at HLV on Thursday.

It was a 1-1 game through four innings. North Tama scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

No individual statistics from the game were available by press time.

The Hawks take on Baxter, a fellow Jasper County team, in the first round of the Class 1A District 11 playoffs. The game is at 5 p.m. on Saturday at Grundy Center.
