A good time to re-read a few favorite books

Perhaps it may be one the genuine “classics” from Dickens, Shakespeare, Longfellow or some humor from Mark Twain. This thought comes to mind as I am re-reading a couple more books from my dear Irish friend Alice Tailor, who has become known world-wide since her first book “To School through the Fields” was published back in 1990.

Preparing another trip to Ireland with my dear wife Mary in July 1995, we had the chance to drive to Innishannon, a short distance from Blarney, to have a good visit with Alice right in their Village Store. What a great lady. On further visits, Alice autographed my stack of her books, which are kept in a favorite spot in my home library. They are available on loan to members of my family and are beginning to look a little frayed around the edges. This I am glad to see, knowing they are being enjoyed by others.

This past winter I re-read several more of Alice’s gems with interesting titles, many true life experiences of her family’s early days in County Cork on their ancient farm. Alice and her husband Gabriel raised a lively clan of four boys and a daughter Lena, all of who now have their own families.

Her true to life masterpieces center around extended family, many friends and are a true delight from beginning to end. Her down-to-earth command of unique words, phrases and experiences are easy reading.

I have just finished Alice's recent books "Country Days" and "The Parish," with two
more to go on my "re-read journey." I will send a copy of this note to Alice, just to let her know that good works and deeds live for an endless time. My offer for an enjoyable journey to Iowa on her next book-signing tour is something that should come about. The true Heartlands of America are right here in the Midwest, with Iowa at the head of the list. Hopefully one of her future voyages will include "The Garden of Eden" of America ... Iowa. Our family will serve as special hosts.

Getting back to my re-read thoughts, I strongly suggest that a trip back in time to when you first read one of your favorite books will likely bring delight and many pleasant memories. Think about and then take some action.

If looking for some delightful new reading, check out a couple of Alice Taylor’s books from your library, preferably her first two for starters, “To School Through the Fields” and “Quench the Lamp” You will be “de-lighted” I am sure.
