Scarlets hand loss to Cardinals

A seven-run second inning put the visiting Des Moines East Scarlets firmly in control of Tuesday’s non-conference game against Newton High’s Cardinals. The Cardinals’ offense continues to struggle as they lost at home 12-2 in six innings.

“East is a good 4A team which plays in the metro league against tough 4A competition all year,” Newton head coach Dustin Brisel said. “We hit the ball but didn’t find the holes like they did,”

Example of that issue came in the fourth inning. Newton had the bases loaded and no outs, but couldn’t score.

The Cardinals were able to put together a scoring rally in the fifth. They faced an 11-0 deficit.

Julian Hotchkin doubled and scored on a single by Gatlin Chambers. Ryan Barr worked a two-out walk to keep the inning alive. Clay Meyer singled in a run.

The Scarlets (14-7) added a run in the sixth. They retired the Cardinals in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.

“With no practice days, we just have to grind this out on the fly,” Brisel said.

Frankie Cataldo started on the mound for Newton and took the loss. Ben Leal and Taylor Danley also pitched. Newton pitchers gave up 13 hits and issued nine walks.

Barr and Meyer each had two singles. Hotchkin doubled while Chambers and Leal each singled.

Newton (1-17) goes to Pella on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. Little Hawkeye Conference game. The Cardinals are 0-13 in LHC action.

The Cardinals will host Norwalk on Friday in a LHC varsity doubleheader. The first game starts at 5:30 p.m. at Woodland Park.
