The Jasper County Salvation Army will host a Family Fun Night beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday at Newton Hy-Vee. The event will feature inflatables, games and free food. All are invited to attend.

In honor of National Salvation Army Week, the local Salvation Army is hosting an event that will be fun for the whole family.

“It’s National Salvation Army Week, so we are celebrating that by having a free event for the community,” Captain Janelle Cleaveland of the Jasper County Salvation Army said.

Salvation Army Family Fun Night will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Newton Hy-Vee. The event will feature an inflatable bounce house, an inflatable slide, carnival games, prizes and other activities. The event will also have free food thanks to donations. Hy-Vee is donating the hotdogs, Frito-Lay is donating chips and Pepsi is donating drinks. Hy-Vee is also allowing the event to be hosted on the grass area by the garden center.

“We’re thankful to Hy-Vee for letting us have it there because we have no grass at our location. We couldn’t have it at our location because we don’t really have the space,” Cleaveland said.

This is the first year Newton will host this event in honor of the National Salvation Army Week. Cleaveland said the local organization did not host an event last year so she wanted to be sure to include an event that was fun for the community.

“It’s always nice to have an event for the whole family. I love the amusement industry, and I love kids. I think it will be a lot of fun. I’m excited for it,” she said.

According to the Salvation Army website, the National Salvation Army Week is observed during the second full week of May. It was first declared by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954. The Salvation Army has been serving communities for more than 150 years.

Different locations have planned other events to commemorate Salvation Army Week. The family fun night is a way for the Jasper County Salvation Army to say thank you for the community’s support.

For more information about the event, visit the event page on Facebook. The event is free and open to the public.

For those wishing to support the Salvation Army, donations are always accepted. To find out more, call 641-792-6131.
