Going one-two in the 800 meters and 1,600 meters helped propel Newton High’s Cardinal boys to the 2019 Cardinal Relays championship on Thursday at H.A. Lynn Stadium.
The Cardinals won six events and piled up 196 points to pull away from the other five schools in the field. It’s the first title at their home Cardinal Relays since 2017. Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks also won six events finishing second with 127 points.
Colfax-Mingo’s Tigerhawks claimed wins in four events and had 102 points for third. North Mahaska scored 67 points for fourth place. Southeast Warren had 50 points and Twin Cedars has 39 points to finish fifth and sixth, respectively.
Treycen Garton and Jackson Mace set the pace out front in the 800. Both ran season’s best as Garton took first in 2 minutes, 11.31 seconds and Mace was second in 2:15.41. Mace had been second in the 3,200 earlier in the meet in 10:54.84.
Brennan Amos and Adam Hunter led the 1,600 for Newton from the beginning. Amos pulled away late to win in 4:52.03 with Hunter crossing second in 5:04.41.
Cardinal seniors won the two shortest sprint races in the meet. Mason Lee nipped Lynnville-Sully’s Ethan Wyma at the finish line, winning in 12.16 seconds to 12.18.
The same team combination played out in the 200 with MaKenna Davis running a season-best 24.23 seconds while L-S’s Kinnick McFarland had a season-best 24.33 for second.
Lynnville-Sully’s Tyson Vander Linden posted a season’s-best 51.43 to win going away in the 400. Newton’s Camden Winther took second-place medal in 54.39 and L-S’s Slater Young was third in 58.01.
Lynnville-Sully’s Gage Vander Leest blazed to a gold medal in a season’s-best time of 15.23 in the 110 hurdles. Newton’s Dylan Farver was second in 15.94 seconds.
Colfax-Mingo’s Zarek Hill posted a winning time in the 400 hurdles in 57.72 seconds followed by Lynnville-Sully’s Blake Rea in 1:04.31. John Neal of Newton was third in 1:05.36.
It was an anchor leg by Hill that gave the Tigerhawks the win in the shuttle hurdle relay, a season’s best 1:06.63. Newton’s foursome of Farver, Neal, Nicholas Millbrooks and Gage Gomez had a lead but finished second in 1:07.10, a season’s best. Joining Hill for C-M were Trinity Schroeder, Brady Berkey and Colton Hernandez.
The Hawks opened the running events with a win in the 800 sprint medley in 1:39. 83 posted by the team of Wyma, Vander Leest, McFarland and Vander Linden. The Tigerhawks were second in a season’s-best 1:41.61 with the team of Berkey, A.J. Gibson, Schroeder and Hill.
Newton won the 4x800 relay with the team of Emmanuel Roy, Hunter, Amos and Garton in 8:50.71. Second went to Colfax-Mingo’s foursome of Hernandez, Hunter Green, Noah Strohmeyer and Zach Steenhoek in 9:20.48.
Lynnville-Sully won the 4x100 in 47.28 with the team of Wyma, McFarland, Vander Leest and Young. Colfax-Mingo won the 4x200 in 1:38.00 with the team of Berkey, Schroeder, Gibson and Hill.
In the field events, L-S’s Rylan James claimed golds in the discus, 130 feet, 1 inch and the shot put at 50 feet. C-M’s Berkey cleared a season-high 6 feet in the high jump to win. Newton’s Davis went 18-9 1/2 to win the long jump.
Lynnville-Sully and Colfax-Mingo compete in the South Iowa Cedar League conference meet in New Sharon at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. Newton heads to the Pella Invitational, which starts at 4:45 p.m. on Monday.
