Doubles teams set up Newton girls for 2nd in home triangular

Three girls’ tennis teams converged on the courts at Newton’s Aurora Heights Park Monday afternoon. There were 18 matches contested and each team won six so it came down to a tiebreaker — total games lost.

Saydel’s Eagles won the Newton High girls’ tennis triangular Monday with 84 games lost. The Cardinals was second with 91 games lost in their six matches and North Polk’s Comets had 97 games lost.

Newton’s No. 2 doubles team of Maggie Garrett and Jaysea Miller and No. 3 doubles team of Lily Rausch and Maddie Thayer netted two victories each.

Garrett and Miller pulled out a 10-9 (3) win over North Polk’s Grace Ethofer and Liz Vorsten and defeated Saydel’s McKenzie Myers and Kerri Abrams 10-7.

In the No. 3 doubles matches, Rausch and Thayer beat North Polk’s McKenna Halverson and Kalynn Pitcher 10-3 and downed Saydel’s Gabby Neddermeyer and Riley Erickson 10-7.

Ashley Loehr and Kloe Pettigrew played as the Cardinals’ No. 1 doubles team losing both matches. They dropped a 10-6 decision to the Comets’ Chloe Laizure and Zoe Dorr and lost 10-7 to the Eagles’ Darian Garcia and Delaney Thompson.

Jamie Rogers went 1-1 at No. 1 singles for Newton. She beat North Polk’s Alia Springer 10-4 and lost to Saydel’s Sonja Ordinteva 10-0.

Also going 1-1 was Newton’s No. 2 singles player Kaylee Cross. Cross dropped a 10-9 (2) decision to North Polk’s McKenna McCauley. She picked up 10-1 win over Saydel’s Jaedyn Gill.

At No. 3 singles, Newton’s Delaney Nasalroad went 0-2. She lost 10-9 (4) to Asima Pandzic of North Polk and lost 10-5 to Saydel’s Linda Lee.

The Cardinals step back into Little Hawkeye Conference dual action at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday.
