Newton High’s Cardinal Invitational is billed as a Last Chance meet for the Drake Relays. Drake Relays qualification deadline was midnight on Thursday.

The Cardinal Invitational is also the first home track meet for the Newton High boys and girls. It’s also stacked with tough competition.

Newton’s girls finished 12th out of 14 teams, scoring 18 points. Cedar Rapids Prairie won the girls’ division with 118 points followed by Pella in second with 67 points.

There were only 11 teams in the boys’ division with Newton scoring 35 points for ninth. Ottumwa won the team title with 105 points and Ames was second with 91.

Cardinal senior Rachel Rhoads was attempting to make the 2019 Drake Relays field in the 1,500 meters. The fastest 21 girls across the state qualify.

Rhoads claimed the gold medal Thursday at home in 5 minutes, 03.88 seconds, which was off her season’s best. That time was 4:49.22 and had her 33rd on the 1,500 list.

Sophomore Kynnedei Terpstra ran fourth in the 100 in 13.24 seconds.

The top performance of the meet for the Cardinal boys came in the shot put ring. Seniors Ben Peterson and Mason Lee went 2-3 at 46 feet, 2 inches and 45-5, respectively.

On the track, freshman Brennan Amos was third in the 1,600 in 4:48.94 and junior Dylan Farver was third in the 110 hurdles in 16.34 seconds.
