Newton track teams finish 8th at Ames’ Hi-Coley Relays

AMES — Taking on tough competition at the Ames High’s 50th Hi-Coley Relays on Tuesday, Newton High’s track teams landed in eighth place in their respective divisions.

The Cardinal girls scored 20 points. Southeast Polk won the girls’ division team title with 163 points.

Newton’s boys had 18 points. Host Ames claimed the boys’ championship with 165.5 points.

Rachel Rhoads had the top performance of the night for Newton athletes. Rhoads finished fourth in the 1,500 meters in 4 minutes, 59.22 seconds.

Kynnedei Terpstra was eighth in the 200 meters in 28.08 seconds. Brooklyn Cupples took eighth in the 400 dash in 1:08.20.

The Cardinal girls had three relays turn in sixth-place times. Rhoads combined with Kate Callaghan, Ashay Malow and Clare Muckler for the distance medley in 4:45.90.

Callaghan, Malow, Terpstra and Teddie Brunsmann ran sixth in the sprint medley relay race in 1:59.94. Callaghan, Nya Davis, Cupples and Terpstra went 53.72 seconds in the 4x100.

In the 4x400, the team of Malow, Rhoads, Muckler and Cupples was seventh in 4:32.60. Davis combined with Pricila Amador, Emma Rogers and Heather Perry for eighth in the 4x200 in 2:04.33.

Grace Benson, Lauren Zaabel, Molly Coy and Kelsey Church was the Cardinal girls’ 4x800 relay team, taking eighth in 11:54.61.

Ben Peterson claimed sixth in the boys’ shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 3 inches. MaKenna Davis was eighth in the long jump at 19-7 1/2.

Dylan Farver nabbed a seventh-place finish in the 200 meters, 24.77 seconds. Mason Lee was seventh in the discus at 126-3.

Farver combined with John Neal, Cole Swank and Gage Gomez for sixth in the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:09.46. The 4x100 relay team of Farver, Davis, Nate Maki and Camden Winther was seventh in 47.80.

In the 4x200, Lee, Maki and Davis joined with Christian Lampman for seventh in 1:38.70. The sprint medley relay team of Reese Hammons, Maki, Gomes and Adam Hunter was eight in 1:48.04.

Finishing seventh in the distance medley relay race was the Newton team of Zane Biondi, Dalton Altemeier, Treycen Garton and Jackson Mace. Their time was 4:19.42.

On Thursday, the Newton boys are at Saydel and the girls go to a meet at Indianola. Both meets begin at 4:30 p.m.
