Last Thursday, the Cardinal girls rolled to an 11-0 win over Des Moines East.
On Monday, the Cardinals dropped an 11-0 decision to host Boone.
The Toreadors had six seniors — two played singles and doubles while the other four just played doubles. The Cardinals had one player back with varsity experience.
That is junior Ashley Loehr who played No. 1 singles for Newton. Boone’s Myra Bernard beat Loehr 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Boone’s Lauren Wielend blanked Newton’s sophomore Jamie Rogers, 6-0, 6-0.
Junior Jaysea Miller lost at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2 to Boone’s Kinsie Zinnel. Newton junior Kaylee Cross battled Boone’s Elle Turner, dropping a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 4 singles.
Junior Kloe Pettigrew lost 6-2, 6-0 to Boone’s Alaney Parker at No. 5 singles. At No. 6 singles, the Toreadors’ Ana Freund beat senior Maddi Thayer 6-0, 6-3.
Moving into the doubles competition, Loehr and Miller combined for Newton’s No. 1 pair and lost 6-4, 6-3 to Wieland and Bernard.
Zinnel and Turner got a 6-2, 6-0 win over Newton’s Rogers and Cross at No. 2 doubles.
Newton juniors Cristal Perez and Sam Adams had the closest match of the night.
At No. 5 doubles, the junior duo pushed Boone seniors Anna Olson and Kara Lohman but lost 6-4, 7-5.
Boone’s Parker and Freund, both seniors, combined for a 6-0, 6-1 win over Newton’s Pettigrew and Thayer at No. 3 doubles.
The Cardinals sent seniors Haley Rinehart and Delaney Nasalroad out for No. 4 doubles.
They lost 6-0, 6-1 to Boone seniors Bailey Miller and Megan Osborn.
The Cardinals (1-1) play on the road for a third straight time on Friday. They play at 4 p.m. at Marshalltown.
Newton’s girls have their home opener on April 9 to begin Little Hawkeye Conference play. They host Grinnell at 4:15 p.m. at Aurora Heights Park.
