Medicap offers drug disposal

In effort to keep old or unused medications disposed of safely and properly, the Newton Medicap Pharmacy now offers a year-round collection container.

MedRxDrop Box is conveniently located inside the pharmacy and offers a safe and proper way to dispose of medications. Unused or old prescription medications, including legally-held controlled substances, such as narcotics can be dropped anytime at the pharmacy during regular business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Accepted Items:

• Prescription medications (including controlled substances)

• Over the counter medications

• Prescription Patches

• Prescription Ointments

• Vitamins and Supplements

• Liquid Products — tightly capped (ie: Cough Syrup)

• Pet Medications

Not accepted Items:

• Sharps & Syringes

• Thermometers

• Hazardous Waste

• Aerosols

• Illicit Drugs

• Regulated medical waste or commercial waste

“As members of the community, pharmacists are in a prime position to ensure the safe and proper handling of medications, from dispensing to disposal,” said Julie McCarey, R.Ph., managing pharmacist. “Unused or expired medications pose risks to our families, our community, and the environment if they are not properly disposed. Spring is the perfect time to clean out your medicine cabinet and bring those old medications to us for proper disposal.”
