PCM’s Van Ryswyk earns IPSWA all-state hoops honor

PCM senior Andrew Van Ryswyk averaged a double-double in each of the last two seasons for the Mustang boys’ basketball team.

His final prep season included a postseason victory over Chariton in which Van Ryswyk put in 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

After averaging a double-double and shooting 44 percent from 3-point range, Van Ryswyk was selected to the Class 2A all-state second team by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association recently.

The IPSWA released its all-state teams for all four classes on Tuesday. Van Ryswyk was one of 24 players honored in 2A.

Other notable honorees included first-teamer Conner Hill from South Hamilton, first-teamer Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter and third-teamer Logan Peters of South Hamilton.

Pella’s Logan Shetterly was named to the 3A third team.

The 2019 Mr. Basketball went to North Linn’s Jake Hilmer and Bettendorf’s D.J. Carton after a tie in the voting.

It was the first time Mr. Basketball was split between two players since Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich in the late 1990s.

Hilmer, an Upper Iowa recruit, led North Linn to the 2A state title this season. He scored more than 2,300 points in his career and has more career assists and career steals than any other player in Iowa high school basketball history.

Carton averaged 24 points, 7.6 rebounds and six assists in 4A this past season.

Carton received 27 Division I offers and will play for Ohio State at the next level.

Van Ryswyk averaged a team-best 17.4 points and 10.6 rebounds for the Mustangs this season. He made 49 shots from 3-point range while shooting 44 percent from downtown.

Van Ryswyk, who scored 934 career points, connected on 52.7 percent of his shots from the floor and 77.4 percent from the free-throw line.

Van Ryswyk was instrumental in PCM’s postseason win over Chariton, scoring 23 of the team’s 47 points.

Against conference rival South Hamilton, who won the league and finished third in 2A, Van Ryswyk collected two double-doubles.

Van Ryswyk had 21 points and 11 rebounds in the first meeting and then had 23 points and 13 rebounds in the second game.
