Determination is evident when Newton High junior Destin Schroder steps on the wrestling mat. On Saturday, Schroder faced Indianola’s Miles Berg in the 182-pound championship match of the 2018 Newton Cardinal Classic.
Schroder came out with a 5-3 win to claim the first-place medal at 182 and was Newton’s lone weight class champion at their home tournament. The Cardinals did have six wrestlers reach the medal podium as a top-three place winner.
“It feels pretty good to be a champion at home. I’m really excited for our upcoming meets and getting on the mat all season,” Schroder said after going 4-1 on the day.
“I’m good in some positions on the mat but really need to work on my conditioning. I got dinged for stalling a lot today which means I have to be more active.”
Newton senior Jaise Gulling, who is No. 10 in Class 3A at 195 pounds, and junior Gage Linahon, who is No. 5 at 220, suffered their first losses of the season on Saturday. Gulling lost 6-5 to Johnston’s Javian Rolley in the title match. Linahon was pinned by ninth-ranked Cameron Baker of Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson at the 2:31 mark of the 220 championship match.
Iowa City High, which is ranked No. 7 in Class 3A, took the tournament team title with 200.5 points. Johnston was second with 199 points and Indianola was third with 166 points.
The Cardinals scored 132.5 points to finish fourth. Mount Vernon was fifth with 128.5 points followed by Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson with 79 points for sixth. Ames scored 56 points to edge Knoxville with 51 points for seventh place.
“It was good for our first tournament of the season. I was pleased with our kids’ attitudes today. They went out and wrestled hard and were competitive,” Newton head coach Andy Swedenhjelm said. “We’re fortunate we don’t start off our season with a real easy schedule. The first week we’ve had a lot of tough matches.”
Freshman Brennan Amos won his first four matches of the tournament at 113 and lost 11-4 to Johnston’s Rheiner Stahlbaum in the title bout. Amos took the second-place medal.
Junior Zane Kohlmeyer was third in 152 and sophomore Gabe Abrams took third in 285 as both went 3-2 on the day. Kohlmeyer had a 19-4 technical fall win over Ames’ Brady Burkheimer in the third-place match. Abrams pinned Indianola’s Ben Teasdale in 4:53 to claim third.
“The good things about wrestling good teams is it shows what you need to work on,” Swedenhjelm said. “All of our guys know the things they each need to work on and we’ll go from there. I’m proud of all of them and looking forward to our progress.”
Placing fourth in their weight classes were freshman Damien Bayles at 120 and junior Canaan Terpstra at 145. Freshman Joseph Colin Sharp at 138, senior Reece Caves at 160 and sophomore William Muckler finished fifth in their weight classes.
Taking sixth place in their weight classes were sophomore Anthony Bestell at 113, senior Thomas Cox at 170 and junior Gabe Hoen at 220.
Newton will take on Fort Dodge and host Des Moines North at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday in Des Moines.
