• Melody S. Ryther, 56, of Newton, was charged with fourth-degree theft at 6:51 p.m. Monday. According to Newton Police, officers were sent to 2657 First Ave. E. in regards to a shoplifting incident. After speaking to store management, officers learned Ryther allegedly concealed about $207 worth of items in her purse. The NPD reports Ryther admitted to the attempted shoplifting, was arrested and transported to the Jasper County Jail.
