Cardinals drop LHC match to Grinnell Tigers

GRINNELL — Going into Tuesday’s Little Hawkeye Conference volleyball match, Newton High’s Cardinals and the Grinnell Tigers each had a 0-1 conference record. Something had to give.

The Tigers outlasted the visiting Cardinals in a tight three-set match, winning 25-19, 25-15, 25-21. The Cardinals dropped to 0-2 in LHC play and 2-3 overall as the Tigers pushed to a 1-1 conference mark and to a 5-2 overall record.

Newton’s net attack was led by sophomores Meg and Kate Callaghan with four kills apiece. Kate Callaghan had the lone block for the Cardinals at the net and was credited with four set assists.

On the other side of the net, the Tigers got 13 kills from senior Macy Harris. The Tigers combined for 34 kills against Newton with Addyson Petig putting up 21 set assists.

Newton senior Brittney McConnell and junior Kamryn Arguello had two kills each and McConnell had two set assists. Arguello had the only service ace for the Cardinals.

Defensively, Kate Callaghan came up with 15 digs and junior Madi Amos had nine digs. Arguello had four digs, junior Priscila Amador had three digs, McConnell had two digs and sophomore Nicole Hernandez had one dig.

There were no comments on the match from Newton High head coach Ashley Carter by press time.

Newton’s JV No. 1 claimed a 25-18, 26-24 win at Grinnell. The Cardinal JV No. 2 squad lost 25-23, 25-18.

The Cardinals are on the road for two non-conference matches on Thursday. They play Grand View Christian and host North Polk starting at 5 p.m. in Alleman.

Newton will host Oskaloosa in LHC play on Tuesday. The two junior varsity matches begin at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity match is slated for 7:15 p.m. at Newton High School.
