Anderson returns as PCM boys finish third at Pella

PELLA — PCM senior Noah Anderson ran for the first time since April 24 and was part of three wins at the Pella Dutch coed meet on May 7.

Anderson and junior Preston Van Wyk went 1-2 in the 100-meter dash, combined to help the Mustangs win the 4x100 and 4x200 and PCM finished third to a pair of Class 3A programs.

PCM scored 109 points in third. Norwalk won the meet with 153 and host Pella was the runner-up with 137 points. PCM was 10 points better than Pella Christian and 16 points ahead of Grinnell.

The Mustangs won five events on the night, four of which came in relays.

Anderson won the 100 in 11.25 seconds, and Van Wyk was second in 11.50.

Both Anderson and Van Wyk were part of the winning 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

The 4x100 included junior Payton Strovers, Van Wyk, junior Brayton Van Dyke and Anderson, and they finished in 44.24. The 4x200 relay featured Strovers, junior Wes Cummings, Van Wyk and Anderson, and they finished first in 1 minute, 32.08 seconds.

The Mustangs also won the sprint medley and distance medley relays.

The sprint medley included freshman Connor Bennett, Van Dyke, Cummings and Lee, and they finished in 1:41.83. The distance medley relay team of Van Dyke, Bennett, Lee and freshman Beau Webb finished first in 3:48.19.

The shuttle hurdle relay team was second. The foursome of juniors Nick Buswell and Nick Dredge, sophomore Nigel Sperfslage and junior Jarron Trausch finished in 1:04.01.

Buswell was the runner-up in the 110 high hurdles in 16.77, and Sperfslage was second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:00.23.

Strovers grabbed the silver medal in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 7 inches.

Junior Isaac Telfer set another personal record in the shot put, placing fourth with a toss of 47-11 1/2. Bennett placed fourth in the 200 with a time of 24.53.

PCM girls place

fifth at Pella

The Mustang girls got a pair of individual runner-ups from senior Ashley Miller, and PCM finished second in three relays.

The Mustangs scored 79 points in fifth place. Pella won the meet with 162, Grinnell scored 134 in second, Newton was third with 94 and Oskaloosa finished fourth with 88.

PCM was 19 points clear of Pella Christian, 27 points ahead of Knoxville and 66 points better than the Pella JV.

Miller finished second in the 100 and 200 with times of 13.34 and 26.84, respectively.

Miller opened the 4x400 relay that placed second. The foursome of Miller, sophomore Sierra Foster, sophomore Kate McCarthy and junior Paytan Schut finished in a season-best time of 4:09.15.

The 4x200 relay team of freshman Margo Chipps, Foster, Schut and sophomore Lexi Kuecker finished second in 1:49.71.

The sprint medley relay team also was second. The team of Kuecker, Chipps, freshman Emma Houser and Schut finished in 1:56.41.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Kuecker, junior Morgan Uhlenhopp, Chipps and junior Megan Cowman finished third in a season-best time of 1:09.03.

The 4x800 relay team of junior Sayde White, sophomore Hannah McCarthy, sophomore Klaire Jungling and senior Baylee Smith finished third in 10:49.78.

Cowman finished fourth in the 100 hurdles in 17.18.
