Newton boys lose LHC tennis dual at Indianola

INDIANOLA — Newton High’s boys won three tennis matches in their Little Hawkeye Conference dual on Thursday with host Indianola. Cardinal senior Chad Nolin was a part of two of those victories.

Nolin worked overtime in both wins. He outlasted Indianola’s Matthew Beals 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 at No. 6 singles. Nolin combined with senior Devon Van Brogen to win at No. 3 doubles, but they had to go to a third-set tiebreaker to beat Christian Javron and Joe Westlake 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.

Newton’s juniors Brady Eberline and Collin Hemann also had to go to a third-set tiebreaker to win at No. 1 doubles. All three sets were closely contested.

The Indians’ Jack Langenwalter and Beals broke back to take the second set to even the match at 1-1. Eberline and Hemann pulled out a 7-6, 5-7, 10-8 win.

Indianola won the LHC dual, 8-3. Newton is 1-3 in conference play and 2-4 overall.

Langenwalter beat Eberline 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match. Hemann lost 6-4, 6-3 to Colton Miller at No. 2 singles. Indianola’s Braydn Upchurch beat senior Grant Hamand 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.

In the No. 4 singles match, Javron got past Newton’s Van Brogen 6-2, 6-3. Indianola’s Casey Coghlan netted a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Newton senior Rhandy Oldfield.

Miller and Upchurch beat Newton’s Hamand and Oldfield, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 doubles match. Newton seniors Carson Cazett and Cole Cazett fell 6-3, 6-4 to Indianola’s C.J. Koehl and Jacob Moews at No. 4 doubles.

Newton freshman Trent Hamand and senior Dylan Main played no. 5 doubles and lost 6-0, 6-1 to Joe Menke and Ian Smith.

The Cardinal boys travel for a 4:15 p.m. dual on Friday at Des Moines East. The meet was reschedule from March 29.
