As their community service project, the Newton High boy golfers had a clean-up day at Westwood Golf Course on Saturday.
They worked from 8 a.m. until noon picking up sticks and brush on their home golf course before the season gets into full swing.
“Brad Sponseller is always really good about letting our kids play out there. It’s takes money away from the course when we have a whole side of the course closed to host golf meets.” Newton High boys’ golf head coach Pat Riley said of the Westwood PGA Pro and course manager.
Riley would like to give a special thanks to Scott Creech and Dominos pizza as they donated pizza and dessert twists for lunch to all of the kids. He has always been really good about giving to the high school kids and the different programs, Riley said.
Riley said the team wanted to thank Sponseller, who gave the workers free pop or Gatorade for their lunch after the service project was complete. Also a thank you was give to Nick Cummins for all he does to keep the course beautiful and in great playing shape.
“The course gets nicer every year,” Riley said. “Lastly, I want to thank all of the kids that came out on this chilly morning to work. I know they get a lot from the course but it’s really cool to see them ‘give back,’” Riley said. “We have really good kids, and I enjoy coaching them. I am blessed to have this position as the boys’ golf coach and look toward to it every year.”
