MONROE — The Tony Ford era starts with a victory.
The Prairie City-Monroe girls’ golf team has a new coach and a new No. 1 golfer. It’s been a good transition so far.
The Mustangs won their home opener Thursday against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. PCM shot a 200 to win at Gateway Recreation Golf Course. The Rockets roster featured just three golfers, which is not enough to claim a team score.
“The girls played very well for a first meet,” Ford said. “We had set a team goal to shoot 200 with our top four golfers, and we accomplished that.”
The Mustangs’ two seniors led the way. Sabrina Reed was the medalist with a 47, and Madeline Mitchell shot a 48 to finish as the runner-up.
Sophomore twins Alexis and Brooke Dross were the two other counting scores for the Mustangs.
Alexis Dross carded a 52 and Brooke Dross shot a 53.
Sophomore Gabbi Van Baale shot a non-counting 60. Junior Mack Bussan carded a non-counting 74.
“We had a lot of players nervous about playing in their first meet,” Ford said. “We have been doing a lot of short game work and talking about how to flush bad shots and move on. They did well with that, and I think it showed.”
EBF’s Gracie DelaCruz finished third overall with a 51.
The Mustangs return to the links at 4 p.m. Monday against Pleasantville. The meet will take place at Gateway Recreation Golf Course in Monroe.
