Newton girls net two singles wins, lose dual to Boone

Newton High’s Cardinal girls had a tough opening to the 2018 tennis season at home Thursday against the Boone Toreadors.

The Cardinals netted two wins in the 11-match dual. The wins came in the singles at No. 5 and No. 6 with junior Emily Valtman and senior Alexis Hoffman, respectively.

Valtman worked overtime to collect win at No. 5 singles. She won a third-set tiebreaker for the 7-6 (5), 3-6, 10-7 victory against Boone’s Alaney Parker. Hoffman beat Boone’s Brooke Young, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6.

Newton senior duo Katie Suttek and Rylie Bakalar battled Boone’s Young and Caitlynn Messerly in the No. 4 double match. Boone won the match in a tiebreaker, 5-7, 7-5, 10-4.

Boone won the dual 9-2 sweeping the five doubles matches.

Newton senior Bethany Baumgartner lost a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Davi Patterson at No. 1 singles. Boone’s Lauren Weiland defeated Newton senior Kinzie Loree 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

In the No. 3 singles match, Newton senior Natalie Camp lost 7-5, 6-2 to Myra Bernard. Boone’s Emily Braun defeated Newton senior Harlie Durr 6-0, 7-5 in the No. 4 singles match.

Baumgartner and Loree lost 6-1, 6-0 to Boone’s Patterson and Braun at No. 1 doubles. Camp and Durr lost the No. 2 doubles match 6-2, 6-1 to Wieland and Bernard.

Valtman and Hoffman forfeited to Boone’s Parker and Kate Peasley at No. 3 doubles. In No. 5 doubles, Newton senior Madison Bleeker and Kallista Rogers lost 6-0, 6-4 to Boone’s Kendra Allen and Elle Turner.

Newton is scheduled to host Marshalltown at 4:15 p.m. Friday.

In junior varsity doubles matches against Boone, Newton won five and lost eight.

Winning matches were: Jaclyn Michener and Kaytlynn Hughes 6-2, Bayleigh Hughson and Jerica Dafflitto 6-5, Ashley Loehr and Maddi Thayer 6-2, Cristal Perez and Rheagan Oldfield 6-4, and Haley Rinehart and Megan Hartgers 6-4.

Losing matches were: Jaysea Miller and Am Adams 6-1, Anna Van Dam and Lydia Clymer 6-5, Kaitlyn Noel and Emily Light 6-3, Malarie Zach and Trenity Conley 6-2, Kaiah McNeely and Kleo O’Brien 6-3, Caroline Kelleher and Kaylanna Seu 6-1, Kaylee Cross and Olivia Barnes 6-1, and Jamie Rogers and Kloe Pettigrew 6-4.
