Administrators at Baxter High School and Collins-Maxwell High School have been part of a CMB athletics hall of fame for the past five years.
The athletics split between the two schools have changed the format of that hall of fame moving forward.
Baxter will have its own hall of fame in 2018 and beyond and the first class includes five new inductees.
The latest athletics hall of fame class includes Cody Schmitz, Janis Hurley, Jody Bucklin, Trent Clapper and Dean Flora.
The youngest inductee is Schmitz, who graduated from Baxter High School in 2012 after competing in football, basketball and track and field for four years.
Schmitz was an all-state quarterback as a senior and was an all-district selection as a junior and senior.
Upon graduation, Schmitz held the CMB Raider single season and career records for completions, yards and touchdowns. He is still the record holder for season and career passing yards and touchdowns.
Schmitz also is a member of the CMB school-record 4x100 relay team, and he lettered in baseball and basketball.
Two members of this year’s hall of fame class are related. Dean Flora is Janis Hurley’s father.
Janis Hurley graduated from Baxter High School in 1982. She participated and lettered in volleyball for three years, basketball and track and field for four years and softball for five years.
Hurley played on a conference champion basketball team in 1981-82 and a sectional champion team in 1980-81 and 1981-82.
Track and field may have been her best sport. She earned a second, third and fourth place medal in the 4x400 at the state level, a fifth-place medal in the sprint medley and she is part of the Baxter High School 4x400-meter relay record.
Flora is a 1960 graduate of Baxter High School. He was part of many of the most outstanding Baxter Bulldog teams as he participated in football, basketball and baseball. He was all-conference and all-district in basketball and football.
Flora was the starting quarterback for the undefeated TA-MA-JA conference football champion Baxter Bulldog team.
Bucklin is a 1982 graduate of Baxter High School. She played three sports for the Bulldogs, participating in basketball, softball and track and field.
In track, she finished second at the state meet in the 1,600 relay.
Bucklin also was part of one of the best defensive courts in Baxter 6-on-6 basketball history. Her 1982 team ranked No. 1 in the state defensively.
Clapper was a 1992 Baxter High School graduate. He participated in football, basketball and track and field for both Baxter and CMB.
Some of Clapper’s honors include Heart of Iowa all-conference selections in both football and basketball. He also was an all-state basketball player and was a qualifier for the boys state track meet and Drake Relays.
The five inductees will be recognized between the Baxter Bolts’ girls and boys basketball games against CAL on Friday night.
There will be no post-game banquet but there will be a social hour in the Baxter High School Commons during the boys game.
The CMB Hall of Fame started in 2012 with 10 inductees. There have been at least six inductees in each year since then. This is the first year of the Baxter Hall of Fame.
