Myrtle A. Nelson passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 18, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

A time of remembrance and celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22 at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, with a visitation from 10 to 11a.m., one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Myrtle’s family, in her name.

Myrtle Allene Nelson, 74, was born Jan. 23, 1943, in rural Arkansas, the daughter of Allen J. and Myrtle Lee (Osborn) Cupples. She had attended school in Arkansas and Iowa.

On May 5, 1960, Myrtle A. Cupples and Gordon L. Nelson, were united in marriage in Des Moines. Myrtle was a homemaker all her life, devoted her life to her family and will be greatly missed. She was employed by the Maytag Company, retiring in 1992, from the shipping/receiving department. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed gardening, fishing, puzzles and her birds. She was a past member of the W.R.C. “Women’s Relief Corps” and the Kellogg American Legion Auxiliary, serving as the local and county president.

Myrtle is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Nelson of Newton; her sons, Jerald W. (Laurie) Nelson and Kenneth L. (Kristi) Nelson, both of Newton; daughter, Carla Buckles; her six grandchildren, Clint (Misty), Thomas, Jake, Kev, Hillary (Chris) and Cathy; six great-grandchildren; her four sisters, Lucille Grossman of Texas, Ruth Osborn of Oregon, Kay (Steve) Lepley and Sue (Dave) Munger, both of Newton; numerous nieces and nephews; and many good neighbors and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of 57 years, Gordon; a grandson, Scott; a son-in-law, Andy Buckles; brothers, Allen Cupples Jr. and Gene Cupples; and two sisters, Pearl Umbarger and Shirley Crabtree.
