NPD announces recent promotions

The Newton Police Department has announced the promotions of Officer Jon Schuler and Officer Dillon Lavely to the position of Sergeant.

Sgt. Schuler began his career with the Newton Police Department in 2010 after serving one year as a reserve officer with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office. Since joining the police department Schuler has served as a traffic safety officer, field training officer, tactical team leader and, most recently, as a detective with the Mid-Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force. Schuler is an Indianola native and a graduate of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and Kirkwood Community College.

Sgt. Lavely began his career with the Newton Police Department in 2014 after serving with the Chariton Police Department since 2011. Since joining the police department, Lavely has served as a field training officer, defensive tactics instructor, impact weapons instructor, CPR instructor and women’s self-defense instructor. Lavely is a native of Garden Grove and is a graduate of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, Indian Hills Community College and Buena Vista University.

Schuler and Lavely are assigned to the patrol division.
