Momentum shifted from Newton High’s Cardinals to the visiting Indianola Indians after the eighth match of Thursday’s Little Hawkeye Conference dual. It came down to the final match with Newton trailing by six points, 33-27.
Newton sophomore Gage Linahon needed to pin Indianola senior Sam Wolff to reach a tie. Linahon controlled the match, but wasn’t able to turn Wolff for a fall. He won 3-0, but the Indians claimed the dual win 33-30.
The Cardinals rolled to a 24-12 lead winning four of five matches early. The Indians went on a four-match win run to forge a 33-27 advantage.
Indianola’s run concluded with the 195-pound match pitting the Indians’ senior Reece Bowlin against Newton junior Jaise Gulling. Bowlin was fifth in the Class 3A preseason rankings at 195 while Gulling was ranked 10th.
Gulling found himself in trouble quickly in the opening period. Bowlin had the Cardinal on his back, scoring five points. Gulling got out of it and scored an escape to trail 5-1 going into the second period.
Bowlin was up 6-2 after two periods. Gulling came out from the bottom for another escape point in the final stanza, but could not get a takedown and score points on the Indian senior. Bowlin won 6-3.
“Our kids competed hard. They stepped up to the challenge, especially Canaan (Terpstra) who wrestled a tough kid,” Newton head coach Andy Swedenhjelm said. “Indianola matches up with us really well — where our good kids are, their good kids are.”
Newton’s alumni night began with the 285-pound bout. Indianola senior Logan Edwards and Newton junior Ike Bebout went through a scoreless first period before Edwards recorded a pin at the 3:18 mark of the match.
Freshman Anthony Bestell was up 5-4 over Indianola freshman Nathan Sieloff in the 106 match in the third period. Bestell had a takedown and pinned Sieloff with 36 seconds remaining in the match. The win tied the dual at 6-6.
Indianola took 12-6 lead when sophomore Gage Twombly pinned freshman Griffen Fry in 55 seconds at 113. Newton tied the score on a forfeit win by junior Blake Cockerton at 120 pounds.
Senior Ross Hull began scoring points early in his 126-pound match against Indianola freshman Blaine Burmingham. He had Burmingham on his back most of the first period and made it stick with 16 seconds left in the opening stanza.
Sophomore Canaan Terpstra faced Indianola junior Brock Elbert in the 132-pound match with Newton up 18-12. The two wrestlers were locked in a 4-4 battled heading into the second period.
Terpstra scored a reversal in the second period. He pinned Elbert at the 3:24 mark of the match with his teammates and Newton crowd roaring their approval.
At 138, the Indians’ junior Skyler Edgington posted a 4-2 win over Newton sophomore Blake Iske. The Cardinals maintained their lead when sophomore Zane Kohlmeyer won a wild 145-pound match against Indianola freshman Sean Cunningham, 10-6. Kohlmeyer was up 2-1 after two periods.
Indianola scored a quick six points with a forfeit win at 152 pounds. At 160, Indianola junior Hunter VanderWaal scored late to win 6-5 over Newton senior Tristin Langmaid.
A 6-4 win by sophomore Brennan Meacham over Newton sophomore Destin Schroder moved Indianola in a 27-27 tie with Newton. Indianola junior Colt Carpenter had a takedown and three-point near fall over Newton senior Blayden Rhone in the opening period of the 182 match. Carpenter beat Rhone 5-3 to put the Indians on top for good.
That was followed by the 195-pound win by Bowlin to gain a 33-27 lead for the Indians.
Newton is 1-1 in duals this season and 0-1 in LHC action.
“Our kids worked hard on the mat against a good team. It just didn’t go our way tonight,” Swedenhjelm said. “We’re looking forward to Saturday’s tournament here. It’s a tough tournament with several top 10 teams here.”
Indianola, Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson, Iowa City High, Johnston, Knoxville and Mount Vernon join Newton for Saturday’s Cardinal Invitational. Matches begin at 10 a.m. Johnston and Iowa City High are ranked No. 6 and No. 9, respectively, in Class 3A.
“It’s a great opportunity for our kids to compete against good teams. It’s a good chance to measure where we’re at across the board at this early point of the season,” Swedenhjelm said.
Newton and Indianola also had 16 junior varsity matches on Thursday prior to the varsity dual.
