Six rescued from Newton apartment fire; arson suspected

Arson is suspected in an early morning apartment fire in Newton in which six people were rescued.
The Newton Fire Department is conducting an investigation and asking for the public's help for information about the fire that started in the entryway of the Meadowbrook Apartments on East 12th Street North.
At 3:43 a.m. a resident of the apartment heard the smoke detector going off in the hallway, and when he opened the door and saw smoke, another resident called 911, Knoll said. Six people were rescued with ladders through apartment windows from the second and third floors.
The fire was located at the entrance of the building and was quickly extinguished with a fire extinguisher.There was also smoke in the hallways and stairways.
There were no injuries, and residents were able to return to their apartments after the fire was extinguished and smoke was removed from the building. The fire was contained to the entrance of the building with an estimated damage of $10,000, according to Knoll.
